Description
The base material and surface treatment method of the wire drawing drum selected for cost and specification reasons are different. Analyzing the surface abrasion of the wire drawing drum, it was found that the substrate of different materials, using different surface treatment methods, the drum showed different surface wear patterns and different service life. It is necessary to analyze the wear and the base material and surface treatment of the drum to find ways to reduce and delay wear.
Wear patterns of different matrix materials and treatment methods:
| Base material | Processing method | Typical form of wear | Main cause of wear |
| Cast iron | spray melting | Plaque shedding, cracks and avulsion, hollow avulsion | Matrix deformation and uneven thickness of the sprayed layer, processing stress, poor matrix strength, matrix defects |
| Cast steel | spray melting | Honeycomb patchy peeling | Latent defects of the substrate, surface coating defects, no metallurgical bonding between the coating and the substrate, and poor bonding strength |
| Low-carbon steel | Spray melting, wire spraying, spray welding | Arranged equidistantly with the wire | Plastic deformation, poor substrate strength, insufficient coating hardness |
| Medium and high carbon forged steel | Surface hardening | Uniform wear | High strength of the matrix, gradual change of the surface hard layer |
| Carbon steel | Surface hardening treatment | Uniform wear | High substrate strength, good wear resistance of coating |
The wear resistance of the drum is directly related to the strength and hardness of the base material. Different base materials use the same surface hardening method, and the wear resistance is very different; the same base material uses different surface hardening methods, and the resulting wear patterns are similar. Cast iron drums with poor matrix shear strength have poor resistance to abrasive wear and adhesive wear. Low-carbon steel coils with softer base materials have poor resistance to plastic deformation. The wear resistance of medium and high carbon steel coils with relatively high strength and hardness is obviously better, especially the wear resistance of medium carbon steel coils with subsurface hardening and surface coating treatment, and the drum is in a low-wear state for a long time.
